Eddie Bauer Bassinets Involved in Recall

The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission recently recalled the Eddie Bauer Rocking Wood Bassinets because there is a potential for suffocation. The USCPSC has announced a voluntary recall of the product, which means that all consumers are encouraged to stop using the bassinet. As well, it is now illegal to resell or attempt to resell a recalled these bassinets since they have been announced as a recall product.

The seemingly stylish basinets were manufactured by the Dorel Juvenile Group and sent to Target, Toys R Us, and Sears stores all over the nation. The bassinets have also been sold on Ebay. In most circumstances, the bassinets retailed for about $150. The rocking wood bassinets have a bottom locking mechanism that can fail to lock properly in some circumstances. This allows the bassinet to tip to one side, rolling a small baby into the side of the bassinet. If the child is not strong enough to move away from the side, it poses a risk of suffocation when the baby is pressed against the thick fabric lining the crib. Dorel has received 17 reports of incidents of this kind happening to infants that are less than 3 months old.

While there have been no fatalities, two infancies had difficulty breathing after they rolled on their sides on the bassinets. Those children are still being treated. Even if a child does not die from suffocation in this situation, the lack of oxygen can cause brain damage that a child will have to endure into adulthood.
